NIE or Foreigner Identity Number
In Spain you cannot own a house or open a bank account without obtaining an identification document at the police station. The procedure for obtaining a NIE is simple, but it requires a lot of time and is often be present more than once at the police station. The following forms can be obtained from the Police Station and are required when applying for an NIE: Form 790, EX-15, valid passport, photocopy of the passport page where your photo appears and copy of form EX-15.

Foreigners for economic or professional interests
Foreigners who, due to their economic, professional or social interests, are related to Spain, will be provided, for identification purposes, with a unique and exclusive personal number, of a sequential nature. The personal number will be the foreigner's identifier, which must appear in all documents issued or processed, as well as the procedures that are stamped on their identity card or passport. For the assignment of NIE for reasons of economic, professional or social interests, the following requests will be accepted:
- Those presented in Spain personally by the interested party.
- Those presented in Spain through a representative.
- Those presented at the Spanish Diplomatic Representations or Consular Offices located in the applicant's country of residence, corresponding to their residence district.
